How ageing affects your weight

As we age, the way we define ‘healthy weight’ changes.

Measures to determine healthy weight – including Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference and comparisons of muscle to body fat – have their limitations, particularly when used for older adults.

As we age, unfortunately we lose muscle mass. This can lead to several problems, especially an increased risk of falls. The good news is, we can help slow down the loss of muscle through specific physical activities, being active everyday and eating well as we age.

Changes in total body weight vary for men and women.

Men often gain weight until about age 55, and then begin to lose weight later in life. This may be related to a drop in the male sex hormone testosterone.

Women usually gain weight until age 65, and then begin to lose weight.

Weight loss later in life occurs partly because fat replaces lean muscle tissue, and fat weighs less than muscle. Diet and exercise habits can play a large role in a person's weight changes over their lifetime.

Simply being overweight as an older adult may not mean that we need to lose weight – general health can be more important.

Weight loss is more often advised for those older adults who suffer from related health problems and would benefit from being in the healthy weight range.

Exercise is a key ingredient for older people who need to lose weight. This exercise, together with healthy eating (including plenty of protein-rich foods), will help to reduce the loss of muscle that might happen as you lose weight.

If you are unsure about your weight – including being underweight or overweight – you should seek advice from a doctor.

    Muscle - do isometric exercises (Google it).
    Fat-loss - eschew bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. I lost nearly 60kg of fat that way.

    That's how I lost my 20 kgs as well. Also alcohol puts on weight and makes you hungry.You must feel like a new man with 60 kgs gone?

    The article does not say what a healthy weight range could possibly be at certain ages and which ethnic groups they apply to.

    Exercise and healthy diet might be a key ingredient for weight control, but that depends on how much hormone loss you suffer as you get older. Severe levels of hormone loss mean that the exercise won't work for you and your muscles will deflate and waistline inflate regardless of what exercise and healthy diet you have, and severe fatigue resulting from severe hormone loss will not result in effective exercise anyway. A hormone level check should be done, and that should include testosterone levels in women as well as men. People associate testosterone with weight gain, bulking up etc, but that is only in bodybuilders who should not be taking it when their body is already producing peak levels when they are young, It is the opposite post middle age when you bulk up in fat and lose muscle mass because of testosterone loss. I have been on a small 5mg dose of testosterone for women for a few months now (along with progesterone and estrogen) and my middle age spread that I tried and failed to fight off for several years with exercise and diet is finally disappearing without changing anything in my routine. I am also able to do the exercise better without having to stop because of straining, pain, fatigue etc.

    None of the women pictured look as though they are over 60. If I put my weight and BMI against the charts I am always underweight and have a low BMI, yet I am still too plump to wear a bikini. I’m just small and rounded and have been so all my life. Now my daughter is battling the clinic people because her child is also too small for the charts, yet she is healthy, happy and not skinny.

    Give up carbonated drinks they increase your hunger. Eat more fruit and veg and less of everything else.
