Around 1.3m Aussies living with preventable hearing loss

Around 3.6 million Australians are affected by hearing loss, a lot of it preventable.

Is your hearing loss preventable?

Around 3.6 million Australians are affected by hearing loss, with more than a third (37 per cent) of cases being preventable, according to a report released yesterday by Hearing Care Industry Australia (HCIA).

The report projects that by 2060 the number of Australians with hearing loss will more than double to 7.8 million – equivalent to one in every five Australians.

The report highlights that hearing loss can lead to premature retirement, many sick days and a diminished capacity to work productively, as well as having a significant impact on an individual’s ability to socialise.

Help prevent hearing loss, I have so many people around me who can tolerate noise, I have to wear ear plugs.

I am amazed at the variation of hearing loss between my wife and myself. For many rears I wasa in the British army, long before soldiers started using hearing protection, and have shot off thousands of rounds of rifle, plus been around guns, and other noise making gear. I also was into motorcycles and spent a lot of time working on and tuning and riding many motorcyles including road racing with megaphone exhausts and speedway. Now I am well into my 80's and still have excellent hearing to the extent that I can't sleep in a room with a ticking clock.

My wife spent many years as a librarian and other jobs and has massive hearing loss with very powerful hearing aids.

    Not fair is it
