Why Aussie actor will be a perfect Diana

Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki will take over from Emma Corrin as Princess Diana in the final two seasons of the much-loved Netflix drama The Crown.

“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,” Ms Debicki said in a statement on The Crown’s official Twitter account. “It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”

It’s an inspired choice for seasons five and six, which are expected to cover the years leading up to, and following, the death of Diana in 1997.

Here are five reasons we can’t wait to see Ms Debicki play Diana.

1. She’s a Diana lookalike
With her big blue eyes, blonde hair and model-esque good looks, Ms Debicki, 29, is already a Diana doppelganger, and judging by the acting prowess she displayed in The Night Manager and Widows, she’ll have no trouble nailing the princess’s accent and mannerisms, too.

2. She can rock a red-carpet gown
Diana was, and still is, an undisputed style icon, with many of her most famous fashion moments resulting from red carpet appearances in glamorous gowns.

Ms Debicki is no stranger to the red carpet herself, of course, and always looks fabulous when stepping out for film premieres or photo calls. Her most regal outing yet came at the 2019 Met Gala, when she donned a stunning pink Salvatore Ferragamo dress with a huge bow on the front teamed with white opera gloves and a sleek up-do.

3. She’s a fashion risk-taker
Diana was a dedicated follower of fashion and, particularly following her separation from Prince Charles in 1992, her style evolved to include more risqué ensembles. Ms Debicki takes a similar approach, eschewing boring column dresses for interesting silhouettes, bold colours and printed pieces.

4. She really suits short hair
With her killer cheekbones and perfect jawline, Ms Debicki could arguably make any haircut work, but she looks incredible with super-short styles, which bodes well for her role in The Crown. After chopping off her voluminous ’80s locks, Diana sported a variety of short hairstyles, from tousled and shaggy, to sleek and straight.

5. She’s mastered the Mona Lisa smile
Ms Debicki looks most like Princess Diana when posing for the cameras – that coquettish smile, with her chin tilted down, is uncannily similar to how Diana was often captured. Once the actor is transformed with Diana’s ’90s hair and make-up, it’s going to be hard to tell the two apart.

Do you watch The Crown? Do you think Elizabeth Debicki is the right actor for the job?
