Humans of New York didn’t start life as a book. It was originally a blog, the brainchild of one man, Brandon Stranton, a New York local. Brandon goes out into New York on foot to photograph and interview the population. As he puts it, he’s creating “a photographic census of New York City”.
His blog is made up of photographs of the weird and wonderful characters who call New York home. Brandon also interviews his subjects, and each portrait is accompanied by a quote from their interview.
These photographs have been collected into his first book, entitled Humans of New York, and the results are very moving. Each portrait feels like a little window into another human being’s life. Humans of New York leaves me yearning to fly to New York and discover all these wonderful characters for myself. I would highly recommend it for anyone who loves New York, the secret lives of people, or both.
To get a taste of what you might find in the book, you can see the original blog, updated daily, at the Humans of New York website.
