New Windows ransomware scam

A new scam is preying on unwary Microsoft users who eagerly await their Windows 10 update.

New Windows ransomware scam

Yet another malicious virus is catching out unsuspecting Windows’ users. This time the nasty scam is impersonating Microsoft in order to hack into users’ files then hold them to ransom.

This new scam is tricking Microsoft users who are eagerly awaiting upgrades to the new Windows 10 operating system, by using a clever ‘[email protected]’ email address to lure in its prey.

The scam starts its life as a harmless-looking email that appears in your inbox. At first, it probably won’t ring alarm bells, but on closer inspection you may notice weird characters in the body of the email, along with telltale grammatical errors and an IP address that shows the sender is based in Thailand. See the image below for a visual description.

And don’t take any notice of the disclaimer that says the email’s content is virus free. It’s just another way to get you to click on the attached file, which, once extracted, will display an image (below) to let you know you’ve been had. If you see this image, your files have been ‘kidnapped’ and you have four days to pay a ransom to recover them.

One way to ensure that you don’t fall for this scam is to remember that your Windows 10 update will appear directly on your PC and NOT via email.

You can also protect yourself from ransomware by doing the following:

  • always back up your data frequently (i.e. minimum weekly) and store them offline (i.e. external hard drive)
  • be wary of spam and stay away from illicit websites
  • install antivirus software and keep it up to date
  • if in doubt, don’t click it.

I read a post which says that you are agreeing to let Microsoft monitor you. your emails and the webpages you go to. In effect big brother can keep tabs on you.
I have nothing to hide but do not want to have corporations snoop for whatever reason. I WILL NOT BE INSTALLING WINDOWS 10, free or otherwise!

To best of my knowledge this scam started well prior to June.
It appeared on my screen as 4 while squares inside one big one
The son of a neighbour of mine was overseas and sent her a special message not to touch the symbol. I ignored it too. It disappeared off my screen for a week or so but has re-appeared.
Does anybody know how to remove it without opening it?

Have you tried running Malwarebytes, a free and very useful detection tool? I use it at least once a month despite having a good antivirus program.

Sorry I can't really help you Blossom.
Perhaps you could try - https://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/sem/5/?gclid=CK6y-8aSlscCFVgmvQod2kkAbg

From what I remember Malwarebytes worked well when other programs didn't.
The Free version may produce results.

Fortunately I have not had to worry about viruses for many years. My OS is Xubuntu, a derivative of Ubuntu. These Linux operating systems are free to download, and you have no need to download any virus protection. The Ubuntu Forums is a great help too. The way of the future may also be with such applications as Openstack.

I have been regularly complaining to software providers for continuing to support that tired old monster known as Windows. And they don't give you any choice either. If everybody who is as sick of Windows as I am got together and complained regularly maybe something would be done.
