Pay-as-you-go roadside assistance may save your day and your money

A new pay-as-you-go roadside assistance app could save your day and will save you money.

Roadside assistance mechanis fixes a car on the side of the road

Being stuck on the side of the road watching steam pour from your radiator is enough to make you pay through the nose each year for roadside assistance – even if it only happens to you once. But add the total cost of the years you’ve paid for this type of service, then add the total times you’ve actually used it and, for many people, the convenience of roadside assistance becomes an almost unnecessary expense. That is, until you remember the time you ran out of fuel in the rain one cold, cold night all those years ago…

It’s as if someone finally put their thinking cap on and, with a little inspiration from über-type companies, came up with ingenious smartphone app, gotU, which basically acts as roadside assistance ‘on call’. It’s a pay-as-you-go roadside help service that takes aim at yet another yellow-coloured-car monopoly and will no doubt change the face of the industry.

Not only does the app offer PAYG roadside assistance, but there are no ongoing fees or annual membership costs.

Battery flat? A jump-start will cost you $89. Flat tyre? You’ll pay just $89 for someone to change it for you. Locked keys in your car? That’ll be $99 to unlock it. And if you run out of fuel, you can have 10 litres delivered straight to your fuel tank for $99. Even towing your broken down jalopy up to 10km will cost you $99.

You can also pinpoint the service vehicle closest to you, so you can track how far off it is from helping you.

gotU is being trialled in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and hopes to go national by the end of 2017. It is available free for Apple and Android devices.

I'll ADD to that ! Why do we pay the same fee for Third Party Insurance as those that are Habitual Pranger's ?? I've been Driving for 55 years and never had so much as a Parking Fine or Bingle !! Yet I pay the same fee as Doctor Habitual :-( :-(

Roadside assist is no different to home and contents insurance. You might never use it but it's a damned good thing to have just in case. Are we going to have a Uber app next for when your house burns down? The people who use this will be the same parasites who don't insure their home or it's contents and then expect the community to rally round when their house burns down and they lose everything.

They all start out with a reasonable price but then as they get richer they become greedy. I remember when the RACV membership fee stayed the same price for many years with unlimited service. That all changed with the growing population.

If this lot are going to slug you $99 for $13 worth of fuel or $99 for a jump start, why not just join a roadside service provider and pay $110 for a full years coverage for motoring mishaps instead of forking out almost as much for a one off event? At least with an organisation like the NRMA there are added benefits as well, it isn't just about roadside assist.
