How to follow someone on Twitter

Twitter is one of the most popular social networks, with world news often breaking via short and snappy tweets. Read on to find out how to follow your favourite people and pages.

Twitter allows users to send and read short 140-character messages called ‘tweets’. You can attach images, videos and links to your tweets. Anyone can browse Twitter and read tweets, but to make your own tweets you need to sign up for an account.

Once you have an account you can ‘follow’ other users to subscribe to their tweets and gain your own ‘followers’.

To set up a basic profile, you need a Twitter handle (account name), a profile photo and a short bio, so that people will know who you are. You can tweet as often or as infrequently as you like. As a privacy option, you can also change your settings so that only your approved followers can read your tweets.

Twitter is an easy, low-maintenance way to keep up-to-date with the latest social trends, political ideas and developments in just about any industry. All you need to do is find people you want to follow.

Head to the Twitter website or, if you’re using a smart device, download the app from iTunes for iPhone and iPad, or Google Play for Android. Log in or sign up and search for someone to follow by typing into the search box and pressing enter. You might be surprised by who you’ll find on Twitter. Popular pages include comedians (you won’t regret following a few for the occasional laugh), actors, politicians and of course YourLifeChoices’ Twitter page.

Once you’ve found someone to follow, just click the ‘follow’ button at the top right of the page. Your timeline (the homepage on the Twitter website or app) will now include the posts made by this person or organisation. The more pages you follow, the more exciting and personalised your timeline will become. If you ever get sick of a certain person, just head back to their page and click the button that says ‘Following’ to remove them from your timeline.
