Why join Twitter?

Twitter is an easy, low-maintenance way to keep up with the latest social trends, breaking news, celebrity gossip and industry developments and Olga wants to know how to be involved.

Q. Olga

I have been hesitant to start any social media accounts mainly because I don’t know where to start, but also because I’ve heard that it can take up a lot of your time. I have also heard that Twitter is a little different than other social media sites because it doesn’t require a whole profile to be set-up.

I like to stay in touch with what’s going on in the world, but I don’t want to maintain a social media profile. I would like to know whether Twitter would be suitable for someone like me.

A. Twitter works by enabling users to send and read short 140-character messages called ‘tweets’. You can attach images, videos and links to your tweets. Users with a profile can follow other users to read their tweets and gain ‘followers’ themselves.

To set-up a basic profile, you need a Twitter handle (account name), a profile photo and a short 160-character bio, so that people can identify you. You can tweet as often or as infrequently as you like. As a privacy option, you can also change your settings so that only your approved followers can read your tweets.

The great thing about Twitter is that you can tailor it to suit your preferences. For instance, if you only want to use it as a way to stay in touch with friends and family who also use Twitter, you can choose to follow only them. Almost everyone with a public profile is on Twitter these days, so if you want to know what’s happening in breaking news all around the world, you can follow prominent journalists and media sources. You can even follow your favourite celebrities and read their tweets the instant they post them.

Twitter is an easy, low-maintenance way to keep up to date with the latest social trends, political ideas and developments in practically any industry. All you need to do is find people you want to follow.
