Best destinations for over-60s

This age group often tends to either revisit a destination previously travelled or is looking to tick off bucket-list destinations, says experienced travel agent and passionate traveller Mike Eacott from Your Personal Travel Manager.

For some travel inspiration, pack your bags with these places in mind.

European river cruising

In your 60s, you might have already done some coach touring across Europe, so cruising the rivers is an interesting alternative that gives you a different perspective.

With different operators offering different levels of luxury, you can find an option to take you through the waterways of Europe.

From the Rhine River to the canals in Amsterdam, or perhaps the Danube? Then there’s the lower Danube, which is your gateway (or waterway?) to all that Eastern Europe has to show you.

Canada and Alaska

The Rocky Mountains and the Alaskan Inside Passage are both popular places to see in your 60s – or at any age.

Did you know that the Canadian Rockies is home to the world’s largest dark sky preserve?

It’s in Jasper National Park, and having some of the darkest skies around means it is a favourite destination for stargazers and budding astronomers. Plus, at the right time of year, seeing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) is a rare treat.

Alaska has a rich indigenous culture and plenty to see and do, with the opportunity to travel on land exclusively, or mix it up with a cruise that lets you do some day trips.

Immersive experiences

Rather than just powering through a variety of towns and cities, travel in your 60s is best enjoyed when you truly immerse yourself in the local culture. Whether that means a siesta after lunch, enjoying a glass of fine wine to wash down some fabulous food you’ve picked up at a local market, or renting a chalet in a sleepy little town in the Swiss alps for a few months to watch the seasons change, immersing yourself in European culture can be whatever you want it to be and is the closest you’ll come to living like a local without actually moving there.

Difficult destinations

Define difficult? Well, when you were younger, it might have meant anywhere too hard (or expensive) to travel to with kids in tow. But now you’re in your 60s, you can get off the beaten track and linger in a destination for longer to really capture a sense of what life is like in that location.

The Galapagos Islands is one place that comes to mind. Easter Island is another.

Or how about Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland?

You can get there by boat but only for about three months of the year. The rest of the time the journey will be blocked by sea ice.
