The heart of the reef

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the discovery of the Heart Reef.

An Air Whitsunday pilot, John Ramsden, was on one of his daily scenic flights over the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef in 1975, when the heart-shaped formation caught his eye.

The reef is nestled in Hardy Reef lagoon, and the natural coral formation in the shape of a heart has become world-famous icon. A natural wonder, this icon was first called ‘Heart Reef’ in an advertisement for Valentine’s Day, in the year it was discovered.

Forty years later, thousands of visitors still flock to the Whitsundays each year to get a glimpse of this unique icon.

Have you been to the Great Barrier Reef or seen Heart Reef?
