World’s top 10 attractions

Rome’s Colosseum is the king of tourist attractions, according to the annual list of the most popular tourist sites in the world as ranked by Tripadvisor.

The list also revealed that Europe is ‘where it’s at’, with all but three attractions in the top 10 located in this region.

Attractions such as The Vatican Museums, The Louvre, Anne Frank House and The Statue of Liberty are awe-inspiring but, unless you’re there in the early, early morning, you’ll most likely wait up to two hours or more to see them.

Worth the wait? Well, according to the number of tourists who’ve left positive reviews of their visits: yes. And it probably comes as no surprise that many of the top 10 will appear on bucket lists the world over.

“Iconic and historic sites from around the world will always be popular destinations for travellers, but they’re popular for a reason,” says Tripadvisor spokesperson Laurel Greatrix.

Here’s the list, in order.

  1. The Colosseum, Rome, Italy
  2. The Louvre, Paris, France
  3. The Vatican Museums, Rome, Italy
  4. The Statue of Liberty, New York, NY, USA
  5. Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
  6. Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain
  7. French Quarter, New Orleans, LA, USA
  8. Anne Frank House, Amsterdam, Netherlands
  9. Skydeck at Willis Tower, Chicago, IL, USA
  10. Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy

As you can see, Europe dominates the list, with Italy and France alone making up half the list. It is the second consecutive year that the Colosseum placed at the top, with Skydeck at Willis Tower and New Orleans’ French Quarter making their first appearance this year.

How many of these attractions are on your bucket list? Have you visited any of these attractions? How was your experience? Which attractions would make up your top ten?
