Tips from an insider – Margaret River

Larger than life chef Ian Parmenter calls Margaret River home and is only too happy to share the best of what the region offers, and what only an insider would know.

Best coffee
Yahava is the real specialists. Its coffees are sold throughout the southwest or they can be consumed at its premises, adjacent to Vasse Virgin Olive products and Temper Temper chocolates on the Bussell Highway.

Best breakfast
With the best view and really good coffee, White Elephant Beach Cafe, on Gnarabup Beach (pictured above) is difficult to beat. One of my top 10 favourite Australian locations.

Best lunch
Vasse Felix Winery. Chef Aaron Carr is one of WA’s top chefs. Partner lunch with its Heytesbury Chardonnay, into which goes our chardonnay fruit.

Best dinner
Miki’s in town. Truly Japanese owned and run. A hidden gem.

Best local view
Surfer’s Point at sunset

One fun thing you can do for free
Walk the Cape to Cape track. Spectacular.

Something only a local knows about
So far, but not for long, newly opened Hairy Marron at entrance to the town. Bike hire and great coffee.

Favourite thing to do in and around the city/region/town
Open air cinema at Cape Mentelle winery in summer and live music at Settler’s Tavern.

Why do you love this town?
For its diversity, cultural mix, great food, wine, and beer… it’s a real community.
