How safe is your BBQ?

Although BBQ season is pretty much all year round in most of Australia, the warmer months do see more of us cooking outdoors so it’s worth a timely reminder to check your BBQ for gas leaks.

CHOICE has the following simple checks you should undertake before lighting up your barbecue:

  • Check the gas bottle for any damage or rust, if you find any, replace it.
  • Check for gas leaks by spraying or brushing the gas bottle with a soapy water solution – bubbles will form if gas is escaping.
  • Check the hose and hose ends on the gas bottle to make sure they haven’t perished. As a rough guide, replace hoses every five years.
  • Check connections to make sure they’re clean and fit snugly.

“By running a few simple checks for gas leaks and ensuring your barbecue is set up and maintained correctly, the only thing you’ll have to worry about is not burning your sausages,” says CHOICE Head of Media Tom Godfrey.
