Are privacy law changes enough to protect you?

The federal government wants to strengthen the Privacy Act to catch up with an increasingly digital age.

The Attorney-General’s office has given the nod to 38 out of 116 suggested reforms, with an additional 68 consented to in principle.

The concessions give you the right to sue companies or entities in cases of severe privacy violation.

There are still concerns over privacy and the collection of data by car manufacturers such as Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, and Ford. University of New South Wales’ David Vaile says Australians are being exploited by their disadvantageous position in comparison to overseas, where individuals are able to sue companies for considerable data breaches.

My question is: shouldn’t governments be ahead of these changes, with proactive laws in place to protect the population? What do you think? Should governments also be in the gun for failing to protect us?
