Do you live in a rural or regional area? Has your insurance gone up after the floods?
Many people living in flood-prone areas are finding their insurance has gone up by up to three times their previous levels.
However, some people are not happy as they were not affected by the floods and never will be but are still being targeted by the sweeping rises.
This happened to my mother. On the map, she lives relatively close to the Murray River, so she pays a premium for that. The reality is it’s on the top of a cliff, that even the most vigorous flood wouldn’t even get halfway up.
People are considering abandoning insurance altogether as their premiums become affordable.
Has this affected you?
Does there need to be a better system? Should people who are in no danger of flooding, or whatever they are being penalised for, have the ability to appeal the charges?
Yes, we live in regional area and our home and contents premiums have jumped 57.1% this year.
We are definitely not in a flood prone area. We did need to have our roof replaced after a massive hailstorm just before Christmas 2018 and the replacement was not effected until May/June 2019.
Bushfires were within a few kms of us during late 2019 and early 2020 but we were never in danger.
We needed to reduce the price of our home and contents to make the premium affordable.
