Participants are being sought for a groundbreaking trial of electronic spinal stimulation to help patients with paraplegia walk again.

The eWALK neurostimulation trial, funded by SpinalCure Australia and CatWalk Trust NZ hopes to examine the ‘potential of neurostimulation to rewire impaired neural pathways’ and potentially allow people to walk again.

The researchers are looking for a total of 50 participants, with approximately half already enrolled and treated. Utilising a randomized controlled design, the objective is to conclusively ascertain whether the intervention improves function. The trial is taking place in Sydney and Melbourne.

Eligible individuals must be aged 16 or older and have received a diagnosis of a spinal cord injury within the T2 to T11 range, at least one year ago.

Essential criteria include the capability to take a few steps (up to 10 metres) with the assistance of two therapists or fewer, and some voluntary muscle contraction in specific muscle groups.
