Like much of Australia’s cuisine these days, Australia’s best pie is a bit of a mash-up.
The Australian Baking Association last week named Country Cob Bakery’s fish amok pie the country’s best for its crumbly pastry and outstanding flavour.
Country Cob Bakery is owned by two migrant brothers from Cambodia, Chan and Ryan Khun, with stores in the Melbourne suburbs of Springvale and Boronia and a country outpost in Kyneton.
The fish curry pie is cooked with Australian barramundi and is a nod to one of Cambodia’s national dishes.
“Fish amok or Amok Trei is a Khmer steamed fish curry with a mousse-like consistency,” the bakery wrote on Facebook after its win.
“The dish is usually served hot in either banana leaf or coconut shells eaten with steamed rice.”
Not surprisingly, it also won the seafood pie category.
It’s the fourth year that Country Cob Bakery has taken out the top gong, after winning it three years in a row from 2018 to 2020.
What’s your favourite pie flavour. Do you like seafood pies?
