Subscriber Gary is keen to find out if his CPAP machine will ensure his eligibility for the Essential Medical Assistance payment of $140 per annum.

Q. Gary

As I sleep with a CPAP machine every night, I was wondering if I will be eligible for the $140 assistance payable under the carbon tax compensation.

A. There is certain medical equipment for which you will be able to claim the Essential Medical Equipment Payment of $140 per annum. From the list published on the Government's Clean Energy Future website, it does seem that a positive airways pressure device is covered. You can view the list by clicking here.

The Essential Medical Equipment payment must be claimed via Centrelink. To find out more you can contact a Financial Information Services officer on 13 2300. An FISO will be able to conform you are eligible for this payment.

I made inquires about CPAP machine which my husband & I are using every night for cpaps for over 2 years. I rang Centrelink they don't know anything about claiming for our cpaps I did mention about people on dialysis & other people using medical equipment's they said they don't give any assistance, that they claim through Medicare. We rang Medicare they said NO NO NO that is all we got. So where do we or how do we claim it from then. Neither of them know anything about what has been in yourlifechoices. It is very confusing, like to find out what to do next please

I have a CPAP machine and Medicare paid $500.00 towards it. I'm told they give that amount every 5 years. I have no info on money from Centrelink for Carbon Tax but I know it's coming.

That's interesting, did you have to have referral from the Dr as I can get one without any problems if that is the case

My guess is that Centrelink will get on board as the time draws closer - that's my hope, anyway! I am also a CPAP user. What I'd like to know is what information do we need to get in order to claim, e.g. a letter from the referring sleep physician.

If you have private health cover you may receive some money back as well. Im with Bupa and they gave me about $1,000 dollars towards it. I think all I gave the health fund was my account and a letter from the doctor saying I needed it. Anyway check with your healthfund.
