Age Pension 'inadequate'

YourLifeChoices publisher Kaye Fallick spoke to 6PR’s Chris Ilsley about the latest research that shows Australians aged 50 to 70 won’t be able to live off the Age Pension when retired, with 500,000 retirees already living below the poverty line.

The age pension is adequate at the present time for people owning their home, For pensioners not owning their home, I think it is most inadequate. People in this category must be on the poverty line.

Your comment that the pension is adquate for people owing their own home is not correct. I have been widowed since I was 44 (now 75) and have worked hard to pay the mortage, maintenance etc. on my own. I receive a single pension and it is not adequate. The pension may be adequate if there are 2 retirees in the property but on one pension it is not enough. I have small savings which have seen me through so far but this will not last.

I imagine bobby means that you own your home outright. That certainly helps, but the way costs are increasing for home ownership (insurance, body corporate fees, Council rates, water rates, power, repairs and maintenance) the pension is inadequate. I get by, but there is no discretionary money for hospital cover, holidays etc.

The aged pension is definitely inadequate especially for those of a married couple who receive over $230.00 less a fortnight than a person classed as a single pensioner, and those people living in a de-facto relationship and claiming a single pension. I know of places where there are as many as four single persons living in the same household and all are receiving the single pension. The pension system is discriminity the way it is operated at the present time, and we all know that there are people living in this country, and others who are migrating to this country, who have never worked a day in their lives or paid any tax, and are treated far better than those of a married couple, and in most instances those members of a married couple have both worked and paid taxes and yet are treated no better than people on the dole etc., Is this fair, “NO” it isn’t and it is about time some is done to change the laws that all aged pensioners are paid the same, that be it single or otherwise. NO more discrimination. At the moment pensioner members of a married are treated like beggars, not like people who worked and built this country to what it is today. LETS START A PETITION AND CIRCULATE AMONGS THE AGED PENSIONERS, PARTICULARLY THOSE OF MARRIED COUPLES AND SEE THE RESPONSE YOU GET. This comment is made by a grumpy crippled old pensioner who worked for over sixty years and paid his dues, and now expects fair treatment from those who Govern this country – Max (Grumpy/crippled) jackwitz
