Just when you’ve got used to the idea of an onboard bar on planes, there’s a new concept to get your head around. Recently launched in London by dynamic duo Virgin Atlantic and Delta Air Lines, NY-LON is not your average bar.
Inspired by the transatlantic connection of two great world cities, New York and London (hence the name), the unique experience starts from the moment you’re greeted by an ‘air hostess’ at the bottom of the stairs.
Aiming to emulate the experience of boarding a flight, the main bar is reached via a passage reminiscent of an air bridge. Aptly named the Turbine Lounge, in keeping with the theme, the pillows carry images depicting scenes from various corners of the globe and the menu has two sides to it, representing both the London and New York food culture.
But enough about the décor, the real drawcard is the drinks. With a comprehensive cocktail list featuring all the usual suspects, there’s also a wide selection of exciting combinations unique to NY-LON. And after testing a few different cocktails, all in the name of research of course, there’s no doubt the mixologist knows what he’s doing.
While we didn’t test the food, the menu is crafted to complement the drinks and encourages sharing, with small plates, sharing boards and desserts on offer.
In addition to the main bar there’s also a VIP lounge featuring four booths with airline ‘call for service’ features and a ‘Secret Meeting Room’ which centres around a table made to look like the infamous flying carpet from Aladdin.
With a vibe that can only be described as equal parts cool and clever, witty aviation themed references throughout and knockout cocktails, there’s no doubt that Virgin and Delta are onto a winner with NY-LON. The perfect place for a pre or post event drink, NY-LON nails perhaps the most desirable aspect of flying, the experience of escaping the everyday world, without the jetlag of course!
