Jean Paul Gaultier for Target

Target has announced the latest designer to collaborate with them is none other than Jean Paul Gaultier.

Recognised as an iconic international fashion designer, Jean Paul Gaultier has built a fashion empire despite having no formal training. Inspired by streetwear and popular culture, his playful and unusual designs have earned him a reputation as the ‘bad boy’ of the French fashion industry.

If you were lucky enough to get to the The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk recently exhibited in Melbourne, you would have left with no doubt over his unique and quirky style. It’s an experience arguably that rivals that of the McQueen exhibition and, if his collection for Target is anything like his previous work, it will be imminently wearable and feature an abundance of stripes.

The collection is expected to include dresses, separates, shoes and accessories. There will also be some of Jean Paul Gaultier’s more signature styles, including leather jackets, tailored pants and blazers. With around 100 products across the entire range, pieces will be accessibly priced unlike most of his other collections and couture.

Of the collaboration Gaultier said, “I have looked for inspiration in many ways but one of the constants is the street and what people are wearing. I believe in fashion that you can wear everyday not just on a catwalk – which is really what Target stands for at its core.”

Scheduled to drop online and in selected stores early next year, the range will feature both clothing and homewares and will be exclusive to Target.

High-fashion collaborations with high-street chains are becoming increasingly popular. If this one is anywhere near as successful as Target’s 2014 collaboration with Missoni or the recent Balmain for H&M collection, it’s sure to sell out quickly – it really will be first in best dressed.
