Over 40s fashion style to steal

No longer just for celebrities, the title of style icon has been extended to a breed of mere mortals or, as they prefer to be referred to, bloggers. Not only easier to relate to, but often with style far easier to replicate on an average budget, there are many benefits to drawing inspiration from fashion bloggers.

Sadly, for the most part the bloggers who are receiving airtime are young, skinny girls with big wallets. That said, there are plenty of more mature style icons to take inspiration from. The great thing about these fashion influencers who are over the age of 40 is that they know their style and own it. They’ve reached a point in their life where they don’t wear things because they are ‘in’ or ‘out’ of fashion but rather because it suits them and fits in with their wardrobe and lifestyle.

Here are five fashion bloggers over 40 to bookmark. After all, as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Does My Bum Look 40
Follow her for the name alone with the added bonus of being able to draw inspiration for key wardrobe staples and how to put them through their paces. Think stripes, florals, leather, denim, boots, statement accessories and maxi dresses – whoever knew basics could look so good? And no, her bum does not look 40.

Maye Musk
A model and dietician, Maye Musk is the epitome of the real live breathing Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. With striking features, this 68-year-old oozes that effortless cool that is so hard to achieve while always looking splendidly dressed (also hard to achieve). Her style is classy and classic with clever twists and statement accessories thrown in for good measure. She gets all our likes.

Colleen Heidermann
Two words come to mind when perusing Colleen Heidermann’s Instagram – glamorous and fabulous. A model by trade, she may not ‘do’ casual, but if you’re after inspiration for after dark or just want to roll around town channelling your inner Ab Fab Patsy (an idea we completely support) this is the place to start.

Baddie Winkle
Okay, so her style may be slightly outrageous for want of a better term, but you have to admire Baddie Winkle. Not only has she run out of the proverbial f*s to give when it comes to what people think of her but she refuses to let her age and society’s ‘norms’ stand in the way of what she wants to wear: a trait we should all have the courage to adopt. With photos featuring bold colours and prints, Baddie is your constant reminder to wear what makes you feel good … even if that’s purple with a red hat that doesn’t match.

Amal Clooney
Yes, she’s technically more of a celebrity, is just shy of 40 and this isn’t her official Instagram, but you can’t blame us for bowing down to Amal’s flawless sense of style. The beautiful barrister always looks superb wherever she goes, flaunting her natural beauty and an air of understated elegance. Regardless of your age, size or budget, no woman could go wrong by taking a leaf out of Amal’s book.

Do you have another mature style icon to add to this list?
