How to clean your UGG boots

Keeping UGGs clean and dry can be tricky – they’re so comfy and versatile that you can wear them for everything from taking the bins out to popping to the shop for a bottle of milk.

Of course, you never plan to wear them in the rain, but sometimes you get caught.

And after you wear any pair of UGGs for a while, they’re probably going to end up looking (and smelling) a bit worse for wear. Here’s how to make your UGGs look great again – without a trip to the dry cleaners.

How to clean UGG boots
First, start by gently brushing the surface of your UGGs with a dry nail brush to remove any dirt.

Then moisten the surface with a clean, damp sponge. Apply a small amount of mild detergent or specialised UGG cleaning formula to the damp sponge and gently scrub, never apply products directly to the material.

Never saturate them as this can damage the sheepskin.

Stuff boots with newspaper to maintain shape and let boots dry naturally for 24 hours in a cool, ventilated area, avoiding direct heat and sunlight.

Once dry, use a suede brush and brush in a single direction to restore the original appearance.

How to clean UGG slippers
A good buff with a microfibre cloth every couple of weeks can really revive your UGG slippers.

Investing in a suede brush is also a good option to remove dust and dirt.

It’s advised not to cook in your UGGs as cooking oils and food can stain them easily.

As with everything else, stains on slippers need to be dealt with immediately. Try not to allow too much time to pass before treating them.

Protect your UGGs
While it’s important to know how to clean UGGs, the best way to protect your comfy footwear is to treat them regularly with a protectant before use and after cleaning.

Most UGG boots are not waterproof, and it’s recommended to spray them with a suede protectant when you first get them to make them water resistant.

Some frequently asked UGG questions

Can you put UGG boots in the washing machine?
This is probably one of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to UGG boot care and the short answer is no.

It can be tempting to throw them in the machine on a gentle, low-temperature wool wash but it’s not recommended.

The official UGG stance is to never use a washing machine or tumble dryer to clean your UGGs at home.

Should I wear socks with UGG boots?
It’s up to you! You can enjoy the full force of sheepskin warmth without socks. But they feel just as good if you prefer to wear socks.

How do I maintain and store UGGs?
At the end of winter give them a good clean then stuff them with cloth towels or socks and pack them away in a cool, dry place, so they hold their shape for the next winter. Keep them away from dust and direct light.

How do I remove loose threads?
Do not pull on any loose threads. If there are excess threads, simply get a pair of scissors and trim them down.

Do you own a pair of UGGs? Do you wear them outside or just around the house?
