Situated just over 70km south of Perth, Mandurah plays host each year to the world-famous Christmas canal lights. Often compared to a little Venice because of its wonderful waterways and canal lifestyle, Mandurah flashes its wares each year as it turns on the Christmas light fantastic for young and old.
Over 200 riverside houses decked in festive fairy lights illuminate the night sky and they’re viewable from December to mid-January. The best way to see them is by boat, and you can hire your own boat to cruise the canal (licence required), or you can book a group cruise.

Ovation of the Seas breaks Guinness World Record
Royal Caribbean’s newest and biggest cruise ship, Ovation of the Seas, is making its maiden voyage in Australian waters this month. Ovation, along with her sister ships Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas now hold the Guinness World Record for the highest viewing decks on a cruise ship.
“While the views from the top decks of most cruise ships are spectacular they only go so far,” said Adam Armstrong, managing director, Royal Caribbean Australia and New Zealand. “On Ovation of the Seas, guests can experience the North Star, a viewing capsule that gently rises 90 metres above the sea, giving spectacular 360 degree views.”
The $1-billion Ovation of the Seas is the fourth largest cruise ship in the world and is the most technologically advanced ship to sail in Australian waters. It features robotic bartenders, the fastest internet at sea, virtual balconies and the Two70 theatre – a venue with 270 views by day and hi-tech shows at night.
There’s also a plethora of on-board activities, such as dodgem cars, a skydiving capsule, trapeze school and swimming pools to ‘dive’ for. Dining includes the famed ‘Wonderland’ and Jamie Oliver’s first oceanic offering, Jamie’s Italian and Coastal Kitchen.
