Great Irish road trips

Driving in Ireland couldn’t be easier; you drive on the same side of the road, you don’t need a different licence and there’s no end of hospitality along the way to keep you from wearying.

Whether you’ve got five, 10 or 15 days to make your way around the Emerald Isle, choosing an itinerary is just the start of your journey.

If time isn’t on your side, starting in cosmopolitan Dublin and heading east will take you through the countryside for which Ireland is famous. Once you’ve toured Trinity College, had lunch by the Liffey and seen the city from the top of the Guinness Tower, a short drive and you’ll soon be heading over the Wicklow Mountains. Kildare and County Westmead offer perfect opportunities to spend nights two and three along the way. Killykeen National Park allows you to take a break from driving on day four and the journey ends at Newgrange, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For those lucky enough to have no time constraints, then take the road less travelled, and head to Northern Ireland. With time on your side, you can languish by coastal towns and riversides. Indulge in the charms of Cork, Killarney and Galway, opting to detour around the Ring of Kerry of the notion takes you. From Galway it’s onto to Westport and Donegal and you’re right in the heart of Ireland, where the locals are only too happy to make you feel welcome.

Soon it’s time to see a different side of Ireland, as you cross the border into the north, where life may be a little faster paced, but you’ll still be able to linger in Derry-Londonderry, before making a beeline for Belfast. And soon it will be time to follow the Irish Sea south to Dublin.
