Flying soon? Download this app

One of the best parts of flying is watching the world pass by below – that is, if you are lucky enough to get the window seat. And even then it can be hard to know exactly what you are seeing.

Thankfully, the brains behind the Flyover Country app realised just that and have come up with a concept that solves this exact dilemma. By drawing on geological and palaeontological databases, the app uses maps and information from these sources to identify what’s happening on the ground below.

When you plot your flight path using the Flyover Country app, your phone’s GPS then does the rest, by identifying your current location to help map exactly where you are.

You can then view on your phone what’s going on beneath your airplane.

The developers of the app aim to eventually add meteorological and astronomy data, so travellers receive a clearer picture of their flight path flying on cloudy days or evening flights.

What about wifi you wonder? Well through the use of cached maps, there’s no need to have access to in-flight wifi for Flyover Country to work.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Flyover Country app can also be used on road trips or hikes. Just think of it as your own personal guide for all the things you actually want to know!

RRP: Free from the App Store and Google Play.
