Champagne at afternoon tea? You can have it and more at this savvy Melburnian hotel.
In March, the Australian Society of Travel Writers (ASTW) held a high tea and I was lucky to nab an invite. With champagne thrown in, it was fit for a queen. So, where was I? I was busy enjoying the decadent Langham afternoon tea experience in Melbourne.
When one miniature salted caramel and macadamia crunchy tart is not enough, the Langham offers a replenishment service. That meant I could enjoy all the fresh scones I wanted and fit in extra chocolate mousse with raspberries and pistachio.
But I’m getting ahead of myself here. Upon arrival at the Langham’s Aria Bar & Lounge, I was greeted with a glass of sparkling. And after we were settled and introduced to the ASTW members present, the three-tiered cake stands, laden with delicacies, started appearing at our table. I’m sure conversation stilled for a brief moment in admiration of the presentation of the dainty, petit fours. It was food as art.
Now, I know you want to hear what was on the menu. There was a selection of delicate finger sandwiches, including the classic smoked salmon with cucumber and horseradish crème fresh. On the sweet side of things, the buttermilk scones, served with clotted cream, and strawberry and rose petal preserve, were top notch, but it was the miniature sweet, delectable offerings that aroused within me child-like glee – particularly the Valrhona Manjari chocolate sphere, and also the strawberry citrus choux and mushroom-shaped meringue with Chantilly cream.
Expertly brewed tea was also served throughout the affair, and I learned that Langham staff sporting a distinctive pair of Wedgewood cufflinks or a Wedgewood cameo brooch have all been trained in the art of making tea.
To say I regretted eating lunch would be an understatement, so I recommend going on an empty tummy. Because whether you go to mark a special occasion or for no reason at all, you are sure to get a delectable, worth-your-money feed.
The Langham Afternoon Tea is served from Monday until Friday, 10:30am to 4.30pm. At $55 per person, it includes Wedgewood tea, Langham-blend tea, espresso coffee and a glass of sparkling wine. If you want a replenishment of high tea dishes, the total price is $69 per person. If you have any dietary requirements, just inform the Langham when you make your booking.
Bookings can be made by contacting 1800 641 107 or by email.
