Ten of the best travel books

Every armchair traveller knows that seeing the world through books can be just as good as going your own trip. A great source of inspiration to follow in your favourite characters footsteps, here are 10 of our top picks that will have you booking your next trip before you can close the back cover.

1. The Alchemist
Considered something of a modern classic, this book follows the story of Santiago as he travels to the pyramids of Egypt to find treasure. All about life lessons, the power of dreams and never giving up.

2. Girls Who Travel
Another one of my favourites, this addictive book follows the struggles of a serial globetrotter as she struggles to find her place in the world and settle down.

3. Paris Letters
I read this recently and it’s definitely an inspirational story most of us can relate to. If you’ve ever found yourself going through the motions or questioning the meaning of life, not too mention seeking a sea change, then this is the story for you.

4. Into the Wild
Based on a true story, Christopher McCandless donates all his money to charity, picks up his backpack and goes in search of a place to belong. From America to Alaska, this is the perfect tale for anyone who wants to be in the wild.

5. Down Under
Laugh out loud funny, this book documents Bill Byron’s thoughts as he travels through Australia, highlighting the stereotypes. Perfect for anyone about to hit the great open Australian roads.

6. The Motorcycle Diaries
This book follows the travels of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and his friend Alberto Grando all around South America on an old motorcycle.

7. The Beach
Very, very different to the film, the book tells the tale of protagonist Richard who sets off in search of paradise only to realise it isn’t all it seems. A must-read if you’re travelling to Thailand.

8. Wild
A number one bestseller, Cheryl has nothing to lose and sets off on a soul-searching journey hiking more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. This powerful story captures the highs and lows of her journey.

9. 1000 Places to See Before You Die
Covering everything from cities to countries, regions, mountains and rivers, this is essentially a pre-prepared bucket list of everything you need to see and do in your lifetime.

10. Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
The epitome of the saying ‘good things come in small packages’. If this rhyming tale doesn’t get you off the couch, I’m not sure what will.
