There’s no place like home

Aussie travellers prefer to explore their own backyard instead of heading overseas or roaming across country, according to recent research conducted by Avis Australia.

The research shows that Aussies are most likely to stay close to home, with a massive 11 million (58 per cent) travelling within their own state in the past year.

Road trips were the most popular form of domestic travel, with 32 per cent of respondents saying they love a road trip and have been on at least one in the past year.

South Australians are the nation’s biggest road-trippers, with 34 per cent hitting the road in the past year and 56 per cent exploring beyond their borders.

It seems Victorians really love their state, with 64 per cent staying within the border and just 37 per cent taking a road trip elsewhere in Australia. Just 28 per cent of Queensland respondents have taken a road trip within Australia in the past year, despite a wealth of destinations and drives.

The top reasons cited by travellers for selecting their next destination was whether the destination offered them an escape from their everyday lives (56 per cent), followed by safety (53 per cent), weather (50 per cent) and affordability (43 per cent).

Aussies’ top 10 factors for choosing a holiday destination are:

  1. Whether it will help them to escape their everyday lives 56 per cent
  2. Safety of destination 53 per cent
  3. Weather 50 per cent
  4. Cheap 43 per cent
  5. Different/hidden gem 39 per cent
  6. How adventurous it is 34 per cent
  7. How photographic it is 28 per cent
  8. Whether it has activities for the whole family 25 per cent
  9. Eco-friendliness 15 per cent
  10. Local festivals/events 13 per cent
