Nine super spring getaways

Looking to visit somewhere different this spring? With much of the world enjoying milder temperatures between September and November, there’s ample choice to roam across the globe. These historical, cultural or coastal destinations might be just the ticket for your next overseas getaway.

Cultural

New Orleans, USA
‘The Big Easy’ is one of the more underrated cities in the USA, and its prices reflect that notion. Accommodation and dining choices are affordable and abundant. October is a great time to visit this vibrant Southern metropolis, which is known for its top-drawer music scene (the birthplace of jazz and the blues), party atmosphere, ghost tours and Cajun and Creole soul food. Be sure to eat a beignet (delicious fried donut) in the French Quarter before you leave.

Cartagena, Colombia
This romantic South American city has long inspired writers and artists alike, and one look at its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town will show you why. Wander through cobble-stoned streets, past bougainvillea-covered balconies, and soak up the setting of the Caribbean coast. The open-air café culture makes it easy to mingle with locals.

Seville, Spain
This ancient city is going through somewhat of a renaissance, offering modern attractions to complement its ample old-world charm. Enjoy pop-up galleries full of contemporary art, design and fashion, or feast on tapas and fusion meals at one of the many eateries.

Historical

Budapest, Hungary
Australian travellers have finally started to notice this breathtaking Eastern European capital, but it’s still less touristy than its western counterparts. Divided in two by the Danube River – hilly old town, Buda, and 19th century Pest – visitors can experience the best of both worlds, including many heritage sites from the Roman and Gothic periods.

Petra, Jordan
Still largely under the radar to international travellers, Jordan is one of the Middle East’s most tourist-friendly destinations, and Petra is certainly one for the history buffs. Visit the ancient Roman city of Jerash, paddle in the Dead Sea, journey by camel to the Valley of the Moon and absorb the wonders of this archaeological city.

Beijing, China
If the Great Wall of China is on your bucket list, spring is a great time to see it. Formerly known as Peking, Beijing dates back 3000 years and is the last of the four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Take in one of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites including The Forbidden City, Summer Palace and the Ming Tombs.

Coastal

Mauritius, East Africa
Surrounded by Indian Ocean, this picturesque island is the ultimate coastal getaway. Enjoy sea, sun and sand and a range of water activities. Head to Mauritius in October to catch some post-winter rays before the humidity of summer hits.

Split, Croatia
If the Adriatic’s azure waters sound appealing, you may want to add Split to your list. Croatia’s second-largest city is always buzzing and the Dalmatian coastline is postcard perfect. Head there in September or October to capitalise on post-summer prices.

Turkish Coast, Mediterranean
Turkey’s sparkling ‘Turquoise Coast’ is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. The Aegean and Bosphorus waters are crystal clear and uncluttered at this time of year. Peppered with charming villages and stylish resorts, the Turkish coast will knock your socks off.
