There are many eateries in Port Douglas, but just one Whileaway, the friendly café–bookshop situated slap-bang in the middle of Macrossan Street. For those who love books, this shop has a great range. For those who love good coffee and great cakes, ditto, this is the place. And for those who love a good coffee while browsing an endless selection of new titles, then BINGO, search no further.
We have five days in Port Douglas and manage to conjure up an excuse to visit Whileaway each day. Our routine is simple. We select a table – indoors or out – gather up the latest three book releases, order coffee and cake and settle right in. An hour passes, perhaps two. Companionable silence reigns, save the flicking of pages. Or perhaps the scraping of a chair as we get up to select another title or two.
Be warned, Whileaway can be expensive. The coffee and the cakes are great value, but it’s the bag of books you are compelled to purchase that may strain your budget. However, if you ask me, they’re worth every penny.
Whileaway’s coffee was voted the best coffee in Port Douglas last year. But don’t rely on my taste buds – why not try it for yourself?
