Top 10 airlines for 2017

SJ is a regular travel contributor to YourLifeChoices. If she had one superpower, it would be teleportation – the ultimate cure for her fear of flying.

Alongside its Airline Excellence Awards, has just announced it’s top 10 airlines for 2017.

To qualify for the top 10, airlines must achieve a seven-star safety rating and demonstrate leadership in innovation when it comes to passenger comfort. Developed after two years of evaluation,’s unique seven-star ratings system is now endorsed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

With considerable audited website feedback from passengers also taken into account in the evaluation, Editor-in-Chief, Mr Thomas, explained “they are looking for leadership and airlines that innovate to make a real difference to the passenger experience particularly in economy class.”

The top 10 airlines for 2017 are:

  1. Air New Zealand
  2. Qantas Airways
  3. Singapore Airlines
  4. Cathay Pacific Airways
  5. Virgin Australia/Virgin Atlantic
  6. British Airways
  7. Etihad Airways
  8. All Nippon Airways
  9. Eva Air
  10. Lufthansa

With two Australian airlines making the cut, Qantas was a big mover this year – jumping from fourth position up to second, with Virgin also moving two places from seventh to fifth spot.

Mr Thomas concluded by saying, “whether number one or number 10 these airlines are the best of the best – the elite in aviation. They are the trendsetters and the benchmark by which all others are judged.”

Something to consider when booking flights in the future – particularly, if like the majority of the world, you fly economy. Which is your airline of choice?

    Where is Emirates?
    24th Dec 2016
I too felt the same - where is Emirates. I really thought they would be in the top 5. Like Admiral we too prefer Singapore to some of the others.

My last trip on Emirates in Economy was definitely 2nd rate.
Food hardly passable and the re routing after mechanical problems on first plane was woeful without and explanation or advice!!!
Ok I want a safe plane but need full information

Etihad was the worst airline I've been on, so don't agree with it being in seventh place!

I don,t know how Qantas makes it as second they are over priced and I have found the hosties very self serving and almost rude, I avoid it at all costs.

Price does not determine ranking. Yes QANTAS is expensive. However, when returning to Australia, there is a certain sense of 'coming home' with QANTAS.

Always fly with QANTAS now - have tried the on-again, off-again service from most others. Singapore is also good.

Yes price is not everything Mindy, but I don't like paying extra for what I have found is a poor service and attitude and I agree Singapore is good but I haven't used them for a while.

I flew with Emirates this year and was not impressed by them. I do think that Qantas has improved their customer service of late, to my surprise I must confess.
All things being equal however my first choice would be Singapore Airlines.

    Where is Qatar
    24th Dec 2016
    Did you really fly P3s?
    24th Dec 2016
We used to think Emirates was great but after flying with them in September to and from Europe were less than impressed. We felt then they had deteriorated. So not surprised.
I don't think cheap fares means good and airline attendants haven't been called hosties since the 70's i think ????
    24th Dec 2016
I agree with you P3 where is Qatar
    24th Dec 2016
    Umm the Middle East! haha
    24th Dec 2016
I bet Air Canada is on the worst list and if not it should be!
    Funny face

Oh yes, no U.S airlines! I recently flew Emirates and they were brilliant! Where are they! They should be on the list.

I thought Singapore airlines were good but Emirates couldn't do enough for me ( I flew economy). Must admit wheelchair help all the way but couldn't have done it without them. Kudos Emirates!
