Travel SOS: How do border closures affect train journeys?

Joanne wants to take the train from Adelaide to Perth for a holiday. Is this currently possible?

Q. Joanne
I don’t like flying and don’t have my licence, but I do enjoy travelling by train. I live in Adelaide and would like to visit Perth. Is this possible at the minute, given current border restrictions? How have train journeys been operating in other jurisdictions?

A. We are fortunate that most of the border restrictions around Australia are far more open than they were at times last year.

Unfortunately, the Indian Pacific, which operates from Adelaide to Perth, is suspended until 14 February 2021 and dependent on borders remaining open for non-essential travel, but the signs are looking good.

There are still minor changes in place for train journeys around Australia, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but most of these are close to reverting back to normal.

V/Line train services are no longer operating from Albury, with all train services heading towards Melbourne from NSW originating at Wodonga. Passengers who are permitted to travel from Albury into Victoria need to make their way to Wodonga station to board the train. But the shuttle between Albury and Wodonga is not currently operating.

However, services running from Melbourne through to Albury continue as there are no restrictions on passengers entering New South Wales.

Passengers travelling from Victoria into South Australia are required to register their details and any travellers entering either WA or Victoria are required to apply for a permit.

Trips on the Great Southern Rail between Adelaide and Brisbane resumed on Friday 29 January. The Overland train between Adelaide and Melbourne is operating as normal, but you are still required to apply for a permit to enter Victoria.

Trips on The Ghan operating between Adelaide and Darwin are also operating as normal.

What is your favourite Australian rail journey?
