The announcement of the sweet-savoury dessert was met with derision by many on social media, but every tub has now sold out, so clearly some people were at least intrigued enough to give it a try.

Van Leeuwen says it is working on whipping up more of the divisive dairy product but, in the meantime, let’s take a look at some other interesting ice cream flavours from around the world that could cool you down.

Everything bagel and cream cheese

Jeni Britton Bauer, proprietor of Ohio-based Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, is constantly pushing the boundaries of unique treats, as evidenced by her line-up of limited edition flavours.

This concoction includes buttery streusel laden with sesame and poppy seeds – and yes, onions and garlic – woven throughout the subtly sweet cream cheese ice cream.

Cereal milk

Do you greedily slurp up the sweet milk that’s left when you’ve finished a bowl of cereal? Then you’ll love this Cereal Milk ice cream from New York’s Milk Bar.

Fish and chips

After blowing up on social media earlier this year, Little Moons has become a household name – famed for gelato ice cream wrapped in soft, chewy mochi dough and rice flour.

After discount supermarket Aldi was hot on the heels of the brand’s success with dupes, they had little choice but to up their game.

In choices selected to ‘evoke British summertime’, they released special edition Eton Mess, Candy Floss and Fish and Chips flavours.

Chilli

The Scottish spice specialist behind Richie’s Chilli Sauces has created three different chilli-infused ice creams that blend fruity flavours (mango, coconut and raspberry) with a hint of heat.

Squid ink

Often found in Japan and Korea, soft serve squid ink ice cream is jet black with a creamy, mildly salty flavour.

Corn on the cob

New York institution Max and Mina’s is famous for its experimental approach to ice cream, always coming up with new and unusual flavours.

In fact, since opening in 1998, the owners, brothers Bruce and Mark Becker, have created more than 5000 one-of-a-kind ice cream flavours, many of them adapted from their grandfather’s original recipes.

Daily flavour experiments mean that the menu is ever-changing, but Corn on the Cob (a summer favourite), Horseradish, Garlic, Pizza, Lox, and Jalapeño have all made the line-up.

Wasabi

This Japanese import has recently landed in the shopping baskets of adventurous eaters, who say the combination of cold ice cream and hot wasabi is surprisingly tasty.
