Best boutique hotel in Singapore

My favourite Singapore hotel combines history, location and ambience. It’s Fort Canning Hotel, located at the top of Fort Canning Park, a short walk from Orchard Road. High up on a hill, this gracious colonial building boasts magnificent views and total peace and quiet – a rare find in the busy Lion City.

Fort Canning Hotel is also a bonus for those with an interest in military history, as it is the former headquarters of both the British and Japanese military during World War II.

Today, a tasteful restoration has transformed this imposing building into a stylish and tranquil oasis close to the centre of town, with easy access to the Raffles area and the shopping delights strung along Orchard Road.

Breakfast at Fort Canning Hotel is enjoyed in a cabana, overlooking the pool, with a friendly chef on hand to create omelettes just for you. Happy hour means free drinks and nibbles in the ultra-cool lobby or on the deck.

There are many different room configurations, with massive balconies and sitting rooms in some of the higher levels. We stay on the ground floor and are delighted by the ‘in-room’ claw foot bath and outdoor sitting area.

With Singapore Restaurant Week starting on 14 March, maybe now is the time for a quick visit with your significant other?

I can’t recommend the Fort Canning Hotelhighly enough. Should you go, do yourself a favour and book for at least two nights – you simply won’t be able to enjoy all the pleasures of this fabulous hotel in a short stay.
