Monash University professor, Bruce Jacobs, was told it was time to retire when he turned 65. He had never felt more productive and wanted to work on. With assistance from the National Tertiary Education Union he was able to secure conciliation conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) resulting in a five-year fixed-term contract.

Monash University professor, Bruce Jacobs, was told it was time to retire when he turned 65. He had never felt more productive and wanted to work on. With assistance from the National Tertiary Education Union he was able to secure conciliation conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) resulting in a five-year fixed-term contract at 60 per cent of a full-time position.
Monash University is now said to be reviewing the policy of retiring staff at 65.
