How a gift in your will can make a difference to the future of cancer

Leaving a legacy of some kind is important for some, and a reason for living for many others. Be it an inheritance, significant work, or benevolence, there are many ways you can leave a legacy.

Leaving a gift in your will is one that could go a long way towards changing the lives of people affected by cancer.

A gift in your will to Cancer Council NSW leaves behind much more than money. It offers the hope of a brighter, cancer free future for present and future generations.

It is a way of showing your commitment in improving knowledge and outcomes and easing the burden of cancer in Australia. Being part of leading the way through world class cancer research empowers individuals – allied in a singular purpose – to ease the burden of cancer and proactively contribute to it in their own, unique way.

A gift in your will or estate could range from a significant lump sum amount to an ongoing donation but the result is the same: an extraordinary legacy for hope and the power of uniting against cancer.

Where does the money go?

The instrumental role such generous patronage has played within healthcare over the last few decades has helped lead to significant cancer research breakthroughs.

Let’s put this progress into context: cancer survival rates in NSW have moved from less than 50% in the 1980s to nearly 70% today. And did you know the survival rate for childhood cancer is now 85%? That’s testament to how much research and action improves survivorship odds – much of which is only possible due to kind donations.

How is Cancer Council NSW helping Australia build a cancer free future?

Cancer Council NSW is one of Australia’s only cancer charities working across every area of every cancer – helping the community when it is needed most.

Cancer Council NSW is one of Australia’s largest non-government funded supporters of cancer research, funding world-class research aiming to reduce the impact of cancer.

This research has led to improved detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer, with a steadily increasing number of men surviving long after diagnosis. It has helped identify potential treatment options that could kill aggressive cancer cells and potential ways to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients.

One in five people affected by cancer live outside metropolitan areas and, due to huge out of pocket costs involved with travelling to treatment in urban areas, often experience poorer outcomes compared to people in cities.

Cancer Council NSW wants to ensure that everyone – regardless of where they live in NSW – has the best chance to access the care they need.

A Cancer Council NSW advocacy program has led to $149.5m in financial support from the NSW Government for people in regional and rural NSW who need to travel for healthcare. The resulting fuel rebates and subsidised accommodation mean that those living in regional and rural NSW are less likely to skip essential appointments and improve their chances of survival.

More Australians now embrace preventable measures against cancer. This wouldn’t be possible without crafted educational campaigns to raise awareness – again, financed largely by charitable endowments.

Beyond borders

It is leading the way to eliminate cervical cancer in the Western Pacific and contributing to Australia being on track to be the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035. Cancer Council NSW is only able to continue this life-saving work thanks to the generous support of people like you.

Backed by solid financial support and evidence based research, researchers have made stunning revelations regarding oncological diseases.

The sense of hope this gives to people worldwide equates to longer, healthier lives, which means more time, more moments, and more memories with precious loved ones.

“By people generously leaving a gift in their will, we are getting closer to a future free of cancer. We are able to be here today and tomorrow for people affected by cancer – and their loved ones,” says Cancer Council NSW.

“It’s where dreams can become reality. It’s where wishes are fulfilled and things can be truly transformational. This is all thanks to the giver’s generosity.”

So, how can you contribute?

It’s simple, really. You, or your solicitor, can craft a gift in your will to Cancer Council NSW by including its ABN 51 116 463 846 and registered name Cancer Council NSW.

You can do this in four ways:

Residual: Allow fulfilment of wishes towards loved ones while providing maximum help to Cancer Council NSW.

Percentage: Permit your gift to compound as your estate grows.

Assets: Specify an exact amount from your estate.

Estate: Donating assets you own – property, cars, shares, or jewellery.

Once you’ve looked after your loved ones, a gift of even 1 per cent in your will, or as much as you can afford, can inspire new treatments and ways to prevent cancer, or fund research breakthroughs that will help people live longer and better – and ease the burden of cancer.

Cancer Council NSW has partnered with Safewill, a will-writing online platform that can help you write your will.

From 4-10 September, this is a free service, after which you can do so for 50 per cent off the retail price (usually $160).

Here, you can create a legally binding will that will not only help Cancer Council NSW continue its work, but will also safeguard your personal legacy and the people you love.

Your gift will have far-reaching effects and will live on forever in the hearts of humanity, and will beat louder with each breakthrough, one success at a time.

Almost one in two Australians will be affected by cancer by the age of 85. Your generous support will help Cancer Council NSW to pursue its vision of helping people affected by cancer.

A cancer free future. Imagine that!

So, will you consider leaving a gift in your will to Cancer Council NSW?
