Six expert tips on how to style stripes to suit your body

Personal style is all about self-expression. There is no one correct way to dress at any age, all that matters is that you feel good about what you’re wearing. 

Stripes are a classic design that can be worn in a variety of different ways, from colourful modern silhouettes to timeless vertical pinstripes. Stripes have returned to fashion in recent years, appearing both on the runway and in casual street style. 

If worn correctly, they can be used to contour your body, take attention away from body parts you are conscious of, and highlight your strengths. 

Here are some styling ideas on how to incorporate stripes into your wardrobe. 

Go for vertical stripes

Vertical stripes have a slimming effect as they elongate the body and create the illusion of height. They can balance out a bigger and broader upper body, creating a more proportionate image. This makes them a great choice for those who want to elongate a shorter stature or minimise a fuller midsection. 

Contrary to vertical stripes, horizontal prints can draw attention to the breadth of the pattern, often giving it (and you) a wider appearance. 

Consider thicker stripes over thin ones

Thicker stripes can give an outfit more dimension when worn correctly. They are often more flattering than thin stripes and can be incorporated in many ways, depending on the occasion. 

Bold vertical stripes down the length of trousers can make you look taller, and be used to make a statement. 

Wearing thick, diagonal stripes in monochrome or conventional black and white can create a contemporary look. 

Add a pop of colour

To rock the stripes trend, wear a striped jacket over a white or black T-shirt and pants to really make it pop. Just pay attention to where the stripes are positioned, if the stripes fall exactly over an area of your body that you’re conscious of, you may feel they draw attention to the area. 

Avoid stiff fabrics 

Soft, draping fabrics such as silk and rayon can help to create a more flattering silhouette, while stiffer fabrics such as linen or canvas add structure to an outfit. 

Stiffer fabrics often also add bulkiness to the overall appearance. Opt for softer, flowing fabrics that drape closer to your body and produce a slender and skimming silhouette. 

Mix stripes with printed fabrics 

To create an interesting ensemble, pair bold floral patterns with stripes. 

If wearing a floral skirt, match the colours and try a striped T-shirt or vice versa to create a bright summery look.  

When mixing prints, remember to combine a large pattern with a smaller and less significant one. Pinstripes can be used here as they often give off the impression of a solid colour when viewed from afar.  

Using stripes in accessories

If you want to adopt the stripes trend subtly, add them as an accessory to complete your outfit.  

Striped scarves are a fantastic fashion accessory. For a more understated look, opt for scarves that are neutral in colour. However, big and bright stripes can be used over monotone outfits to add a pop of colour.

A striped belt can add dimension to your silhouette. Wear a belt in a nautical stripe pattern over white or blue trousers for a sophisticated and modern look. 

When wearing stripes, keep your body shape in mind

To elevate your confidence and best accentuate your figure, wear stripes that best suit your body type. 
On petite bodies, broad stripes can appear overwhelming. If you have a small frame, wear small stripes with lots of white space. Long vertical stripes on trousers can give the illusion of height.  

The direction of the stripes is crucial for pear-shaped body types, as horizontal stripes can be used to visually extend the hip area and cinch the waist, while vertical stripes can be used to thin out certain areas. It is also recommended to wear solid-coloured pants and play more with colourful striped tops.  

For a rectangle body type, it is best to wear horizontal stripes or a combination of both thick and thin stripes to create depth without adding a lot of weight to one single area.  

Stripes are one of the easiest ways to add some visual interest to your outfit. Choosing the best stripe pattern can be hard, but it is important to pick those that match your style and create a cohesive stylish look.
