Support for republic grows

We could be one step closer to becoming a republic with reports claiming that there’s now majority support in both houses of federal parliament for the move.

Australian Republican Movement also claims that several senior ministers are backing the move, including maverick George Christensen. Opposition leader Bill Shorten has also written to the Prime Minister suggesting that the pair work together to “make new progress to an Australian republic”.

Since the referendum on the republic in 1999, which obviously resulted in defeat for the republican movement, there has been growing calls to cut ties with the UK, with many suggesting that when Queen Elizabeth II ends her reign would be the ideal time.
