App of the month – August

A much-loved (and very hungry) children’s character finds a new home and a Google app allows you to see thousands of stunning artworks in HD.

My Very Hungry Caterpillar

Did you know that The Very Hungry Caterpillar has sold more than one book for every minute since its release in 1969?

Eric Carle’s classic book, and its eponymous caterpillar, has been made into a beautiful children’s game for smart devices. In the game, which is designed for pre-schoolers, the Very Hungry Caterpillar is in need of food and fun. You can feed and play with the caterpillar as it grows fatter and fatter. My Very Hungry Caterpillar teaches children to care for their pet until its metamorphosis into a butterfly. It then lays an egg which needs to be nurtured.

Watch the video below to see how the classic book looks with 3D animation.

My Very Hungry Caterpillar is available for iPhone, iPad and Android. Prices vary.

Google Arts & Culture

We all know that nothing beats seeing the real thing, but this new app allows you to view prestigious artworks from the comfort of your own home. By partnering with over a thousand museums worldwide, Google gives you free access to extremely high quality scans of classic pieces. For an idea of how much detail you can see, here’s a close-up of Vincent Van Gogh’s eyes in a self-portrait at only 50 per cent zoom. At 100 per cent zoom some of the details you can see are astounding, from hairline cracks to tiny spots where blank canvas peeks through.

In addition to paintings and illustrations, Google Arts & Culture has a vast collection of textiles, sculptures, pottery, furniture and more. You can even take a virtual stroll through some galleries using Google’s Streetview technology.

Have a look at the website or download the app below to start browsing.

Google Arts & Culture is available for iPhone, iPad and Android for free.
