Hobart for free

When the weather takes a cooler turn, many people consider packing up and heading to warmer climes. But what about embracing the wintery days and heading south to Tasmania. Rugged and romantic, this little island punches above its weight for things to see and do. To help get you started on your trip, we’ve listed some fun things to do in Hobart for free.

Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens
Every great city has botanic gardens and they’re a great place to wander and get a sense of the history of the city you’re in through its native and exotic plants. Dating back to 1818, these gardens are the second oldest in Australia. Located in the Queens Domain, visitors will find unusual plants and even a Subantarctic Plant House.

Salamanca Market
You can’t visit Hobart without a little shopping at its famous market. Held between 8.30am and 3pm every Saturday in the streets of Salamanca Place, you will be entertained by the music of the buskers as you browse the stalls or stop to enjoy a coffee at one of the many cafes.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
Ok, so it can get a little chilly in Tasmania at this time of year so adding an indoor activity to your list will help you warm up. With free entry seven days a week to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, it would be silly to pass this place by. Featuring a glimpse of Tasmania’s ‘natural and cultural heritage’, you won’t be disappointed.

Mount Wellington
If you’re a walker and enjoy a brisk hike, then head up Mount Wellington on a cool, clear day take in the picturesque views of Hobart city and the Derwent River from the summit. If the trek up doesn’t tire you out, there are many bush-walking trails nearby.

Hobart Beaches
It may not be traditional beach wether in autumn and winter, but the rugged coastline of Tasmania make a stroll along the beach perfect on any day. Clifton Beach, Long Beach, Seven Mile Beach or Short Beach are perfect spots to take a stroll – don’t forget your thermos of coffee to keep you warm.

Cascades Female Factory
Although not free, you can get entry to the site for only $5 and it’s a terrific way to step back in time and get a glimpse of what the female convicts experience was like. Treated like skivvies and personals sex slaves for the officers, their lives were not easy, but the stories of these remarkable women will certainly touch you.
