In the spirit of safety

Qantas’ new safety video is causing quite a stir, and for good reason. Posted the day after Australia Day, the video has already been viewed over 520,000 times on Facebook, with more than 4000 likes.

Featuring 16 diverse locations around Australia, the video does not film any aeroplanes. Instead, the iconic airline has gone back to its patriotic roots and reminded us just how Australian it is.

While all the safety reminders are still there, they’re shown in completely different ways, which correspond to a range of activities undertaken by “real” Australians featured in the video – don’t worry, we won’t spoil it too much!

While airlines trying to make safety videos innovative and more exciting is not a new trend, Air New Zealand have been leading the pack for sometime now. But unlike Qantas, most of these still bare some resemblance to a plane environment. So Qantas’ new safety video is causing controversy, with critics saying it may distract passengers, which somewhat defeats the purpose of showing a safety video.

However, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce, believes it will make passengers pay attention, saying to News.com.au that “what we continue to do and what we have to do is to make customers sit up and notice and make them [safety videos] interesting and different from anything else.” He added that, “what we’re trying to do is celebrate the diversity of Australia and the warm and welcoming people that are there from all different backgrounds.”

And the video does celebrate Australia. Exquisitely shot, it showcases the unique beauty our country has to offer and just why it’s like no other place on earth. Most of all it makes you feel proud to be Australian, just as Qantas’ famous I Still Call Australia Home ad did.

The new safety video is being rolled out across Qantas’ domestic and international fleet from next month. Why not take a look and see what you think? It’s one of the few safety videos I’ve actually watched in full, and I can honestly say I’m a huge fan – it’s five and a half minutes of my life I don’t want back!

And for old time’s sake why not watch their old I Still Call Australia Home ad;

What do you think? Are you all for Qantas’ new safety video? Or do you think it’s missed the mark in keeping customers safe?
