New baggage rules

As of 30 June, new baggage rules came into effect at all Australian airports.

New rules restrict the amount of powder you can bring in your carry-on luggage on board international flights. Domestic flight rules remain unchanged, unless your domestic flight departs from an international terminal.

The rules came into effect after a thwarted bomb plot on an Etihad flight out of Sydney last year.

Restrictions apply to inorganic powders, such as make-up (cosmetics), the snow in snow globes and other souvenirs, and do not apply to baby formula, coffee or other dried and granulated (or powdered) foodstuff.

Inorganic powders must be in containers of no more than 350ml volume or 350g weight.

There may be exemptions for medical reasons, but you’ll need a letter from your doctor and prior approval.

To clarify what this means for anyone travelling with powdered medication or supplements:

“A doctor’s certificate is sufficient for medication being taken on board a plane in carry on baggage. This should be presented to a screening officer at the start of the screening process,” a spokesperson from the Department of Home Affairs told YourLifeChoices.

“Prior approval is not required.”

Do you ever need to travel with some form of powder?
