I was sixteen when I moved out of home and into the Nurses’ Home to begin nursing training. I never moved back home after that. I loved being independent too much.

I do the pruning of the side shoots, and when planting the tomato plants I bury most of the stem, so that pretty has much the same effect as your proposed method. But I’ve never read of the Epsom salt bath, and I will certainly try that one too. Thank you!

The modern-day method of bringing up children has failed, in my opinion. A smack on the behind is a reasonable way of giving emphasis to the spoken word when the child is young, many will mostly take little real notice of what you say. Children can grow up very wilful if they receive nothing in the way of discipline, with little respect for others’ rights and property. Of course, there are many children also who don’t need this kind of discipline, and never will. It’s the ones who are driven by impulse and recklessness who need to be reined in for their own future welfare, as they are the ones causing havoc in the high schools as well as frequenting the law courts and youth justice system.

My feeling run along similar lines. I imagine that the only people in the world who really care are the athletes who have trained with these games in mind. The unfortunate reality is that Commonwealth and Olympic Games have become more of a spectacle than an actual games for sports’ sake. Nations have promoted themselves as the “best ever” hosts and having spent the most ever on their efforts to be the best and grandest. No wonder the Victorian government withdrew when the full costs became obvious. What has happened to the original ideal of the games themselves? It’s supposed to be about the athletes, and the competition, not the glitz and glamour. There are plenty of sports facilities which could be used, new ones aren’t required, nor do we need to have the enormous opening and closing ceremonies. Just saying.

Oh yes, we received our wages every two weeks in an envelope just like that. A great thrill for us to tip the money out into our hands and count it! But I must admit that the way it’s done now is much safer.
