10 little-known Joe Hockey facts

Here are 10 little-known facts about Treasurer Joe Hockey.

10 little-known Joe Hockey facts

As the country waits with bated breath for Joe Hockey to deliver this year’s Federal Budget, here are 10 little-known facts about the Treasurer.

  1. Joe Hockey’s birthday is 2 August 1965, making him a 48-year-old Leo.
  2. His father was a Bethlehem-born Armenian-Palestinian named Richard, who was sent to Palestine by the British as a spy.
  3. His father’s original surname, Hokeidonian, was anglicised to ‘Hockey’.
  4. Joe Hockey has both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Law degree.
  5. While he attended the University of Sydney he was the president of the students’ representative council.
  6. He is married to Melissa Babbage, who is an investment banker and was, at one point, the head of foreign exchange and global finance at Deutsche Bank.
  7. He has three children.
  8. He has walked the Kokoda Track and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. While walking the Kokoda Track he carried a picture of his children in his hat.
  9. Joe Hockey and his wife own a 200-hectare cattle farm in Queensland.
  10. In November 2009, Nick Minchin and Tony Abbott privately offered Joe Hockey the party leadership on the proviso he dropped his advocacy of an emissions trading scheme. He declined the offer.

How many of these facts were you aware of? Were any of these revelations unexpected?

Time to get real people this government was voted in with a huge majority to fix the problems caused by the Labour government - debt & massive mistakes. Give them a chance. I think they are more qualified than most of us to work out what is necessary to make changes to get this country back to being solvent again More chances for everyone, not just lazy people in jobs that obviously are not necessary. Give them a chance & then make your comments.

    QUALIFIED - how ?
They went to law school - QUALIFICATIONS OFF OF CORN FLAKES PACKETS ONLY
SOLVENCY will not happen while there is no business investment / no corporate investment -
AND MY FRIEND - WHILE THE BANKS RUN WILD & UNABATED NO BUSINESS OR CORPORATION WILL INVEST IN AUSTRALIA.
IN FACT THEY WILL NOT EVEN DO JOBS FOR US
    WHY ?
BECAUSE THE MAY NOT GET PAID..................

4 CORNERS did a story a while ago called HAPPY BANKING -
Bank West in W.A. - conned & shafted the construction company who was building their new bank - into insolvency & bankruptcy & that is not all.

Margmatt with due respect...I am sick of Liberal State and Federal Governments blaming the Budget for Labor's mistakes because it is the only big criticism they can find. As Clive Palmer proved on both occasions when he did an Independent Audit ,it is all lies that Murdoch Press want your to believe. His audit revealed in Qld (as well as the cost of the flood) the Libs added assets accruing Income to the Debt figure and Federally they added the money they have spent since coming to power. The Libs take it away from the working class and Labor gives it back but because of the Press bias we do not hear the truth. Remember we were the country that survived the GFC with Labor in power.

Question where is all the money coming from to pay the doll bludgers,? by now there must be nearly as many of them as there are pensioners.

Has Australia ever had a government that has blatantly lied to the people like this Abbott gov'nt? This would have been planned well before the election. it puts their putrid attack on gillard and the carbon tax to shame. all their promises are shonky, Joe Hockey gave a glimpse when saying we should be like asians, and look after our own aged. Their plan is reasonably plain to see, cut back and force the states to raise the GST. Even the most fervent LCP supporter must see through this lunacy. everything they do will be 2nd rate.

It would not matter what facts are posted about Mr Hockey. The results of his and Tricky Tony's budget will either end up in a double resolution election or a complete wash-out at whenever an election is called. The pensioners who simply raised their families who did not have superannuation but bred a family to keep Mr Hockey and his like in comfort deserve respect, not to live out the rest of their lives worrying about where the next dollar will be to pay the simply basics of life (like electricity, water and food). Shame on saying pensioners have to lift the weight of the Fat Cats who didn't give a thought to someone who is not in the same financial bracket as themselves. This budget truly demonstrates the Liberal Party policy.

There should be more points added to the 10 mentioned in Joe's Biog. above. As published in last Saturday's Australian newspaper. Mr and Mrs Hockey live in Hunters Hill in a home worth $6 million, they have a beautiful holiday home in a NSW coastal town (google for details of that property); the property in North Queensland was quoted as being worth $2 million. And to top it off, Mr Hockey said he didn't know of their financial assets - his wife "looked after that". No wonder Joe is not too worried about his future.

c'mon people. It's no difficult at all to see that the electorate has been totally disregarded and disrespected in so many ways the Coalition government has been going about business. To me it would seem it is more about 'tit-for-tat' type politics. A lot of finger pointing to previous government. They all do that. Fact of matter is they all do exactly the same when voted in on false promises. This time however, the Coalition will go down in history of the most blatant and disdainful one for the unashamed lies; and then to be playing on words to make out that the voters have endorsed them to deliver budgetry measures of such kind that will see this country forever change its course towards a second class one. Only the extremely wealthy will be able to benefit while the middle/working class will trudge along; and the underclass of poor. Wait for more appearnances of the poor who won't be able to feed, clothe or house themselves. Already, homelessness is fast increasing. And what about the aged who will find that their care needs will not be met. If you can pay for your care, good luck to you. Society needs strong, fair leadership that will consider the needs of all its citizens. Not divide the nation through its draconian measures. And on the word of the economy: it is not in crisis. You decide if you wish to be hoodwinked. cheers

We need to protest about all the features of the budget,Pensions,Health Care card,Benefits we receive with a pension card and a health benefit card,Medicare,Youth for our Grandchildren so they can access a good education, the fact of the Youth not able to receive Newstart for 6/12-all these are callous cuts from a Politicians on huge salaries with Perks that double and triple their available expenditure.Their Pensions are in the $5oo,ooo and again with perks that multiply their expenditure and they do not have to wait until they are 70 years to get their pension. It appears to me to be hypocritical of them to live an advantaged entitled life and then infer that Pensioners on $317 a week are "Entitled".We should not complacently let them wreck the beneefits even though meagre that we have. They in fact should be increasing the Pension not changing the indexation so that we will be even poorer.

Having read the overwhelmingly critical opinions of the Abbott Govt and, in particular, of Joe Hockey, I would like to invite one (or more) of the bilious bloggers to comment of the following scenario.
Let's say the Abbott Govt was never elected and we continued to have our lives shaped by Gillard/Swan/Shorten et al in perpetuity. Let us further assume that under such a tender caring Govt, nothing of substance was changed in the area of spending more than we earned, but still, at election times, the sugar tit was brought out as a sweetener to guarantee that the status quo was maintained.
Having crunched the numbers, you must then determine just how long it would take to arrive at what may be called "the Greek position" where everybody is on some form of welfare and taxpaying is largely voluntary.
I would suggest that the answer derived from the above exercise would mark the point at which even you lot would have to conclude that things needed to change.
Our current Govt has merely foreshortened that time frame in the interest of a "softer" landing, and yet, the cloth cap mentality of you lot must decry it as another instance of the time honoured ideological class war.
I find your collective ignorance depressing.

Are we in debt? Seems the government right down through the various departments into local government hold millions in investment accounts. Let's have a full audit by a Commission that has unrestricted parameters to call to a hearing and get the full information. We hear the class arguments from labor and liberal, but that is spin doctoring to hide the truth, Abbotts government was claiming labor left a huge debt and then went out and borrowed a similar amount. Something for you all to think about. We will only do well when everyone contributes. Norway I believe has no debt. why? Because big business also pays taxes. Anyway as I have said these governments (state and federal) are not lawful governments. The lawful government is the people and the parliament is its servant. the present rogue governments are political factions and it is time we demanded lawful government. Study your Commonwealth constitution and see how rogue parlaiments have misbehaved and made laws for the vested few. Victoria parliament is voting to try and restrict people's right to protest or to appeal. An example of corrupt actions is demonstrated with the Victorian parliament passing laws using the invalid 1975 Victorian Constitution to pass laws to create its own third tier of government "local government". This is in breach of the Commonwealth Constitution 1900-1901, therefore invalid. The 1975 Victorian Constitution is also invalid and is just a document. Victoria acted outside of its authority. To bring it into law requires Due process. e.g. a referendum. royal assent and a repeal of the 1855 Victorian constitution, None of this has happened. Victoria cannot repeal an act or law of another country, i.e. UK. I could go on and on demonstrating the treachery of these political factional corporations but I have not enough space. Cheers. Do something about it. or go and cry in your beer "Oh Woe is Me". It is the responsibility of all of us to ensure parliaments behave

The reason boofhead is so small minded . he is paying the whole population back for being bullied at school.

    Here is an obvious fact!
He is a Fully tax funded Puppet member of the Liberal Party Machine!
His duties include representing that party and it's Policies for the Private Ownership of everything that makes money as well as access to run everything the Government can outsource legally and thus entitle every Private Enterprise to free access to the Australian Tax Dollar as well as change the system to suit Private Enterprise's exploitation of the worker's right to a fair go!

No wonder he cannot relate to the masses. Like other politicians, he has a wealthy wife and much property. It is easy to ignore the plight of the less fortunate when one has financial security. He probably believes everyone can achieve what he has and cannot comprehend that life is not as generous to every person. Youth can live on fresh air whilst unemployed!

With that profile he has lost the ability to understand ordinary people nor the struggles that are part of an ordinary life - it would also help if he had a care factor or a listening ear. I will never ever ever vote for the LNP while he and the current PM hold any position at all. It does not matter what they do from this point on they have displayed what they are capable of - as they espouse that the age of entitlement is over for all except themselves, being paid huge amounts till they pass on - not just till 65 or 2 years after leaving office - but forever - if he did his sums he could cover the budget debt by just making fair adjustments to his and his cohorts entitlements.
