Be careful what you ask for

We’ve all seen them. Those tourists who feel the need to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa or get a light from the Statue of Liberty (apologies to anyone reading this who’s guilty of such transgressions).

And while watching them in pursuit of capturing these corny travel photos may put a chip on your shoulder, just remember it’s a little harmless fun.

One such tourist, Sid Frisjes, one day tried to get that cliché pic of holding his finger atop the Eiffel Tower but couldn’t get the right perspective. So he took a near-enough-is-good-enough photo (above) and posted it on image-based bulletin board 4chan, asking if someone could “Photoshop the Eiffel Tower under my finger”.

What was a seemingly harmless request turned into Sid’s 15 minutes of fame and a hilarious internet chain mail that will linger in the internet prank hall of fame forever. Nowadays, he’s known as ‘the Eiffel Tower finger guy’.

The anonymous collective known as 4chan – which, according to Twisted Sifter, has a reputation of being ‘the ultimate pranksters – gladly obliged Sid’s original request and, since 2015, has been adding more images to the archive.

There are scores of responses to Sid’s request, but these are the 10 that made us laugh most.
