The Public Trustee

Could anybody like to share there experience with the Public Trustee
I am hearing horror stories of immediate familys locked out of homes, huge per anum charges for managing estates, diffuculty trying to even buy possesions that hold great sentimental value for children of the deceased .
It appears to that in giving these people the right to manage the estate it is a condition that they also be given power of attorney. Fair enough, if it is used with common sense
Recent advertisements i have noticed in the press by the public Trustee offer 7% or better interest on money (In this climate) This also appears to carry the condition power of attorney is to be given to them WHY?. I would expect normal contracts would protect them from any loss they might incur.
Are they actually a government dept?
Any information that may help me make a decision for my future would be appreciated

The Public Trustees are rogues and abuse their power. I would never put my possessions in their hands.

I have had dealings with them for nearly six years. Stay clear of them. They are very expensive and are a law unto themselves.
