24 hour cat curfew to protect native animals

Cat owners who live in or near areas containing Australian native animals, may no longer be able to let their feline friends outside, as part of a push for a 24-hour curfew on cats. The Government's feral cat plan seeks to control roaming cats that kill native wildlife and birdlife, and is also looking to cull over 2 million feral cats that roam the community. Will this affect you? Do you agree with this action? If not, how would you fix this problem?

the idea of a curfew is a good move which along with a cull should be part of a many pronged policy.

i am hoping to see real action and not just words which maybe just broken political promises.

What about city folk? Will they be allowed to let their cats out to kill the Indian Mynah birds and black sewer rats? Both are introduced pests and the Mynahs have scared away other birds.

I wonder how they will monitor whether people comply or not....will they rely on neighbours dobbing in neighbours?

Crossbench senator David Leyonhjelm has declared the quoll should replace the domestic cat in an effort to preserve native mammal populations.

In a speech to Parliament the Liberal Democratic Party senator argued making it legal to domesticate native animals like the quoll and bilby would ensure their survival.

"Certain kinds of wallabies make great pets. The quoll may replace domestic cats," he told the Senate.

"The bilby is often nominated as a great candidate for domestication.

I recommend Mr layonjam find a new job - not a clue on native fauna.

in full ageement....cats should be confined to their owner's property, just as dog owners have to do.

All owners should have an area that is completely enclosed with netting to keep their cats on their own property.  Give the cats somewhere to sleep in the sun, toys and climbing to keep them happy.

All cats/dogs should be microchipped and De-sexed.

I have to keep my dog on my property or on a lead outside in the street, clean up their poo.  Why should I have to clean the neighbours cat poo up in my garden ???

All dogs and cats should only be sold by registered places so that they can keep a register of who they sold the animal too so that they can be checked up on.  This could be done with registered breeders and pet shops who sell the animals.

It  will put an end to these Puppy Farms and stray cats.

We have had a "Cat Curfew"  here on the coast (Mornington Peninsula) for 10 years now!  This is nothing "new" to a majority of suburbs in Melbourne???  There are huge billboards everywhere with Cat pics on them - reminding people of the curfew!

Maybe I need to put a "post" on my "Nostalgia" Topic??? i.e. Remember the days you used to walk down the street and pat heaps of cats on ya way .....those days are long gone!  Although I guess very few people walk much anymore?  - All cars!  You never ever see a cat anywhere here on the Peninsula these days! Never ever!!

P.S. My cat never leaves the back decking - and is always in at 5pm every night!  My "Magpie" family have walked around her for 8 years! I have pics of them eating/sitting next to each other ...... like people - you cannot "tar all cats with the same brush!" .........   :-)

I walk the streets putting leaflets in letterboxes and see heaps of cats and pet them ,

There's a good article on The Conversation about arguments for NOT killing feral cats. Worth a read.

Beside cruelty, culling causes a phenomenon called the vacuum effect, when cats are removed from a location, survivors of the kill effort and new cats who have moved in breed to capacity.

Unfortunatelly HUMANS are the biggest threat to the native flora and fauna by continuously destroying their habitat whether it be for mining, building roads, houses, hospitals and parks etc

The HUMANS are further careless in letting their cats as well as dogs just to wonder around.

.... perhaps a few careless humans should be culled which would be more likely to be affective.

Yes I fully agree with the 24 hour curfew on cats as well as dogs and kids :)

: )   me too Abby
