Telstra's new charges discriminate against older Australians

Senior's groups have slammed Telstra for its new monthly charge for non-electronic billing and payment methods, saying it's discriminatory against those who still utilise these payment systems.

As of 28 November, Telstra will impose a 60 per cent fee hike for customers hwo receive a paper bill or pay theit accounts face-to-face. These customers will be hit with a $3.20 bill, up $1.20 from the current $2 charge.

Telstra has responded by saying, “Pensioners and health care card holders are automatically exempt from this fee. It is all set up with them when they connect or they advise us they have become eligible."

“We have about 980,000 customers claiming our pensioner discount, which includes a reduced connection fee and a monthly discount on charges,” according to a Telstra spokesperson.

Customers are advised that if they were not a pensioner or healthcare card holder at the time of opening Telstra accounts, they should inform Telstra of their circumstances to avoid being charged this new fee.

Do you still use the paper-based billing system? Would you switch to the electronic system because of this fee?

I can't see what the problem is if those that can't afford it are excempt. Telstra should not be charging for billing no matter what. It should be a part of their service.

I pay electronically, but still like to see a paper bill.... I have been getting the penioner discount for years.

You are able to log into the Telstra site and see a detailed list of all calls made and daa used by all phones linked to the account. You are also able to print this so "paper bills" are still available ---- you just need to print it yourself.

I to pay on line but I like to get a paper bill as I keep them for 7 years.

I have been getting the pension discount for many years too.

If Aged Pensioners are being exempt from these new charges just how is Telstra discriminating against older Australians, other than possibly the wealthy ones who do not get a pension?? A very silly article.

We all have to move with the times, eventually, if possibly reluctantly.  And if one receives phone bills electronically and wants to keep a paper copy for some reason, one can always print one off.  Why waste money posting pieces of paper around the country?

Electronic communications are much quicker, more efficient, far more environmentally responsible and we should all use them, unless there is a very good reason why not, eg having some kind of disability.  And it would appear Telstra have had that covered by their exemptions to the fee for many years.

So I don't think there should be much debate about this one.

Are you automatically exemp if you are a pensioner or do you have to contact them? My daughter has m.s. And cannot us a computer because of her eyes. She does receive a pension. Do I need to contact them ( it's so much hard work, try it! It's not as easy as it sounds being shifted from depRtment to department, and I can't understand them, even though they are polite, and nirmalky end up where I started! Usually about a frustrating hour later!)

However Ferny there are many that do not have a computer -- so that dicriminates against them, even if you do you still have to have a printer and ink which costs a heap id you wish to print out bills.

Yes Funnyface, I agree they are polite enough IF you can understand them.

Funny face, phone the Telstra phone number on your account page, tell them your problem, and they will handle it for you. Good luck.

Here! Here!

I've been with Telstra for 3+ years and have never received any pensioner discount.

I was told at the time of signing up that there is no pension rate because I bundled phone/internet/mobile.

So as far as I know, Telstra does not give any special rates for pensioners when you signup for a bundle and, in fact,  you loose the home phone discount and pay the full rate with no pensioner discount.

Have I got it right? Telstra does not have pensioner rates for internet and/or mobile services?

D'Arcy,

I have only my home phone with Telsra and I am with Internode for internet --can speak to Aussies there and I love their way of being able to buy more downloads per month on ADSL if I want to very cheaply.

I don't have a mobile at the moment as I don't need one but am looking to get one later so I will ask about a discount on home phone and mobile then.

Telstra is the only one to have for a mobile as Telstra get out in more places than any other.

DÁrcy,

I have rung Telstra and asked about the pensioner discount on the phones, you will not get that on the mobile OR the internet but you will get it on your HOME phone so just ring and ask for it.

Hope that helped you.

Man, if you are one of those tragics still using Telstra then you deserve every little piece of shit they throw at you !

Fearless Telstra are the only ones worth having for Mobiles as they get out in most places and the others don't,  I don't like them for the internet though

Where I live the only mobile that works at home is Telstra.

Yes D'Arcy,

Telstra is the one that gets out in more areas than the others ---did you see my reply to you above --- in RED

Yes, thanks PlanB

I get an email bill I can print this and file it as a paper copy. I pay through Bpay which is quite simple once you have regisred  through your bank. THis is the simplest for me. You can use a computer or a tablet or a phone. I am comfortable with this but some people aern't.

Bluetrain

I do the same, and print out the first page only - after I've read it through.  It works for me..and Paypal do the rest.

You are right D'Arcy.  I checked my account and although I do get a discount it is not a pensioner one.

Pamjean, if you are on a pension and with Telstra you should get a discount on your HOME phone -- if you aren't ring and ask for one

I get a a pensioner discount with optus for my internet bundle.

There is no discount for bundled services however pensioners are exempt from the $2 paper bill fee. be careful if you query anything on your account because his will often result in the $2 charge being set up on the account. It will take many many calls to get it cleared off. It took 5 months of being told we will credit the $2 (which they did) but each new bill showed a credit and a charge. Very frustrating indeed.

I am with Westnet for internet and landline.  Our account is debited each month and it is easy to go to their website and see every phone call we make.   I notice that my bill is a cheaper since I switched over to them from Telstra.  Don't seem to have those 1 second phone calls which would pop up regularly and I had no way of knowing if they were legit or not.

My mobile is with Telstra and I pay $70 a year for what is called "Pre-Paid Long Life" and it suits us down to the ground as we make few mobile calls.

Hubby has a phone with the same set up.

Have had it for years and if you dont use up all the $70 you can roll over as long as you pay the $70 the day before the expiry.  I have $400 on mine still so you can see how often I use it  lol.  You are only allowed to hold up to $500 on it.

Hubby still has $40 left on his phone which needs to be recharged on 31 January.  He can use mine if he running low but I doubt he will even use the $40.

I have tolds lots of people about this Pre Paid Long Life but few have taken it up.  If you only want it for emergencies it is great.  My sis in law pays $20 a month and rarely uses it all and loses the credit.  Cost for her works out at $240 a year.
