Should there be stricter penalties for animal cruelty?

Kate Brown, a woman from Florida, made what she believed was a casual post on Facebook a few days ago, however users of the internet aren't taking it so lightly.

The post shows her Chocolate Labrador with its mouth duct taped shut, accompanying the photo is the text 'This is what happens when you dont shut up!!!'

The image has since been shared by over 350,000 people and countless have reported the image to police enforcement who have vowed to update when they have more information.

The poster has since defended her actions and said that it was only for a minute and the dog hasn't barked since.

Do you think animals deserve better treatment or is this an overreaction? Do you think harsher penalties should be in place or perhaps potential owners should have to pass a short course before buying a pet?

I wonder if Ceaser Milan has seen this outrage, she is obviously too lazy to get help to train her dog, she does not like like she is on the breadline!

The dog deserves a better home.

I have in the last week had to say goodbye to my last dog ever, she was 12 and had a brain tumour, so to see this lovely dog taped up just makes me weep (again, and again,)

Yes it is also dreadful the way out pollies don't seem to care a hoot about the live trade and how those poor animals are treated --I have been contacting and writting to my local member for years about this and get the SAME old letter back every time -- and to hear the likes of Barnaby Joyce and many of the others including Abbott none of them give hoot and all they care about is the M O N E Y.

Bad enough that those poor Animals have to be killed at all --- let alone the dreadful truck and boat trip as well.

We should have it done in the most humane way HERE!

I agree with Phyl hanging too good for them but do it anyway.

Dogs and cats suffer worse due to kids today never having experience that one time they stamp their tiny foot and say no to a parent. Lost them from then on when dont get that smack.  Smack not a Hit or stupid clip around the head which has caused deafness when over an ear etc.And these then grow up to have a dog or cat - and think they can do what they like to them - dogs get it worse and a cat can fight back with claws and we're more wary of them, dogs tend to be obedient to us most of the time and take it all too often.

Did you know dogs they say now have same brains as ours in way we think and feel. Which is why since time began we have stuck together, dogs made a pact with humans, give us the warmth of your fire and we'll warn you of enemies approaching.

Dogs bark - we can train them not too some of the time but not all of the time. They tradionally bark at noisy motor bikes and vehicles that startle them.

I find training them to lower their bark once you say "quiet now" wait tills complies then "Good boy", then  and so on "lower", "Good boy" and they do try to obey but first off will always bark loud due to being startled and afraid.

Like they are afraid of fireworks and loud noises like thunder. I get annoyed at council today using ratepayers money for fireworks all too often and scaring the dogs to death for what 10 minutes of fireworks or bit more at huge costs when say Sydney Harbour etc and now the Cities of the world compete how much they can spend of our monies to win.

Left has done us no favours with their soft treatment of bad behaviours and making excuses all the time and we cant punish them no must rehabilitate them - left uses words to change attitudes and not for the best either.

@ Plan B and Dizzy. I thought same when lost my last girl,  a Yorkshire terrior, I'm too old to give another a home. KoKo talked me out of it as well as the awful silence of no sound of paws or licks and cuddles, just dreadful silence, and we both said same time - lets go to the Dogs Home and see if we can give a rescue dog a home. Better that than being put down.

And so 10 days later we did.  take a rescue dog. And he is now 11 and a wonderful companion. He was a puppy, I wanted an older dog, but Hubbie took one look at this little chap ad picked him up and said - I know I said no pups but look at him.

I get annoyed that people have a dog then leave it out in all weathers alone when they are pack animals and very social need company and if only got one dog then humans make up their pack and feeder is the leader of pack.

And Plan B - I agree with you on live exports. Barnaby Joyce annoys me but whichever Minister does when a man - seem to just consider the profits rather than animal. Julia Gillard they say did a wrong thing when she banned it. Maybe should have done it gradually but I think she was right to ban it. NZ did years ago and mainly ship frozen and chilled also to the same market, Muslims, who say wont take anything other than fresh on the hoof. Liars they just like to torture them as happens in every single place they are in charge.

Totally agree Val

Gillard did the right thing when she banned live export ...

YEs Val I totally agree Gillard did the right thing -- Abbott "apologised"  for her doing it --shows what heart he and his mob have like Barnaby.

I would like to see them in the same position as those poor cattle and see how they like it.

Federal independent MP Andrew Wilkie was willing to travel on the ship with the cattle but they would not allow him --so we know what they are hiding and it is horrid cruelty, and the Government don't give a hoot !

...hear hear ...... pity it didn't last very long!!!

if they gave these people a stiff jail sententence it might make others realise that its just not on,     most,   IF CAUGHT,    just get a fine,    they shold be banned from owning a  animal for life ,  and fined a coupe of thousand dollars,    hit them where it hurts most,    in there hip pocket,     if i had my way i would bring back the lash for certain crimes,    and this would be one of them,  cruelty in any form to any animal is worse than to humans,     the poor things cannot speak for themselves,     it is up to us to protect them,     some people are just cruel bastards,    and i am putting that lightly,   if i said what i really feel, i would be barred for life,

I agree Cats

Animal cruelty is much more serious than even here acknowledged.

Those who commit animal cruelty should be incarcerated in an asylum for the criminally insane for evaluation.

It is recognised that animal cruelty is a short step to assaults/murders of humans.

In the life  of every serial killer, there is a history of animal cruelty in the background.

Those who give cruelty no heed whether it be within horse-racing and grey-hound racing, certain farming practices and the live export trade should be reigned in.  Such practices should be banned. To let them exist as the do, whilst totally abhorent to thinking prople also sends a very bad message to certain sections of the community.

There is absolutely no excuse for animal cruelty, and many, many reasons why it should be prevented for the wider good of society.

Societies are recognized by the way they treat their weakest and most vulnerable members of their society, and this includes animals.

This person should have her fingers duct taped together for eternity for posting such irresponsible tripe on Facebook. Honestly, this sort of stuff is not that uncommon. There are no bad dogs, just bad people. And she claims her dog doesn't bark anymore. Only because it's living in fear of being tortured again! What a weak, crappy, despicable, disgusting, depraved person. The fact that she even defended herself leads one to believe that she may a six-pack short of a six-pack...

She says she loves her dog, but is this the action of someone who loves their dog? Would you do this to a screaming kid? No, you'd figure out why they're barking and sort the problem out at the root.

Some people... I love dogs, but some people...

I am so sickened and incandescent with rage, I know I won't sleep tonight.

Would the kind souls on YLC please sign this petition ...

I have signed this b4 Twila, but I have done it again too.

This type of thing is just so cruel as they are skinned alive and China and Korea also does the same thing

In my lifetime I have saved many dogs from cruelty and death.

I took them in and nursed them and had them to my vet to fix their problems and ailments.

When they returned to good health I found good homes for them and kept in contact with the new owners.

Would you people do that or do you just like moaning and groaning about it?

Yes I would Campbell in fact I have nursed 3 back and kept them for many years and gave them a wonderful life till they died

Campbell,

That is very mean spirited of you.  You have no idea of what people here might do.  You are just making assumptions to make yourself feel good.

If one was to exercise the same mean spirit as you do, one could question whether you are in fact telling the truth about saving dogs.

That's why I'm asking you moaners.

I'm telling the truth.

Would you like some pictures?

Campbell, I am a believer in putting your money where your mouth is - you are obviously doing this, good on you!

Campbell we ARE NOT moaning we are showing our horror and distaste for  cruelty to ANYAnimals

CAMPELL,   at one ime i had 9 ,   yes nine    cats here,   none of them mine,    people were just dropping kittens off because they knew i loved cats,  [and dogs,]      some were kittens with there eyes not even opened,   i nursed them and found homes,      no one on here is moaning,  [except you,]    we are just voicing our disgust,     get off your soap box and just keep up the good work,
